Freedom of Information Award

"Lost Kids Easily Found" by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel took the only prize awarded this year in the Freedom of Information category. According to the judge, Ian Marquand of the Missoula, MT, SPJ FOI Committee, Ê "This was a very impressive entry. The Sun-Sentinel fought hard to gain access to the public records it sought. It told its readers about the role of public records in monitoring government activity and explained why access is important. Then it went further, assisting lawmakers in their efforts to improve Florida's law regarding information about children at risk. The Sun-Sentinel has both defended and extended Florida's Sunshine laws."
